Case Study: Achieving a Perfect Color Match Across Different Materials

The Challenge

Our client wanted to create a premium skincare serum in a bold, vibrant red. The goal was clear: the glass bottle and the dropper had to match perfectly, creating the impression of one seamless, high-end package.
While it may sound straightforward, the project involved a significant technical challenge.

The packaging consisted of three different materials:

  • Glass bottle
  • PP (polypropylene) closure
  • Rubber bulb (silicone)

Each material absorbs pigments differently, has its own surface properties, and reflects light in a unique way. This means that using the same Pantone reference across all components does not guarantee the same visual result.

Our Solution

Creating a perfect color match required much more than simply selecting a Pantone shade.

Glass coloring follows a completely different process than coloring plastics or elastomers. Each material has its own transparency, gloss level, texture, and color depth, requiring individual pigment formulations and production adjustments.

To achieve a consistent appearance, our team carried out multiple rounds of color sampling and fine-tuning for each component. Every sample was evaluated under both natural daylight and artificial lighting to ensure consistent color perception in different environments. Through a series of careful adjustments and extensive testing, we achieved a uniform, premium-looking finish across the entire package.

Why Was It So Challenging?

Matching colors across multiple materials is one of the most demanding aspects of cosmetic packaging development.

The final appearance is influenced by several factors, including:

  • the glass coloring process,
  • the masterbatch formulation used for PP components,
  • the material properties of the rubber bulb,
  • wall thickness,
  • gloss or matte finish,
  • and the way each material absorbs and reflects light.

As a result, two components produced using the same color specification can still appear noticeably different once assembled.

The Result

After several development iterations, we successfully achieved an almost perfect color consistency between the glass bottle, PP closure, and rubber bulb.

The finished packaging looks as though it has been manufactured from a single material, reinforcing the product’s premium positioning and creating a distinctive shelf presence that exceeded the client’s expectations.
